Active Users/Devices on stats?

How about putting the number of active users/devices on the stats pages? It doesn't matter much now since the grid is so new, but later on it would be helpful to see how many people actually stick around.

One of my gripes with the UD grid.org stats is that it is quite obvious that there's nowhere near the 3 million devices or 1.2 million users reported in the totals that are actually active, but I figured they didn't want to put these particular stats up for marketing reasons. Hopefully you guys will do things differently and add them, since this grid is supposed to be completely for non-profit purposes.

Of course, the high churn affects pretty much all the distributed computing projects, which makes it even more important to have IMO, so that we know how popular the grid actually is and can adjust our promotion efforts appropriately.

Thanks.

Re: Active Users/Devices on stats?

I must admit that I thought that the figures shown here did show the real number of users and devices in use:

Statistics Last Updated: 01/04/2005 06:00:02 (UTC) [4 hour(s) ago]

Totals:
Members 41,457
Devices 57,188

Guess we need a definitive statement from WCG.

Re: Active Users/Devices on stats?

Hi Stares and Kiseki,

Unfortunately the devices don't really add up to new computers on the WCG as each time you register your PC with WCG you get another device even though it's still the same PC. This may happen for a number of reasons, if your hard drive fails and you have to reinstall the OS for instance. Another anomaly is caused by the use of UDMonitor that allows you to cache WU's on your PC for crunching offline. To use UDMonitor a number of virtual reality devices are created that are essentially the same PC. The 2.5 Million devices on grid.org are a great advertising feature by UD that’s why they won’t let you delete them. Hopefully it won’t be the same on WCG but at the moment I’m registered as having 2 devices when I only have 1 PC as I temporarily went back to grid.org in the early days of WCG as they had a temporary problem with the supply of WU’s.

What we can work out from the stats for yesterday are that 22012 Athlon XP 2700+ equivalent PC's were on all day crunching for WCG yesterday which is a lot of number crunching power just 6 weeks into this project.

Just keep on Crunching

Dave

Dave - You know this is one of my favorite topics. While I agree the bottom line equivalent of 22012 pc is right, no one likes misleading advertising. Either seti or folding showed a statistic of number of pc's from which results were returned within the past X days/weeks/months - which seems to add realism to the number.

Seems like if a result wasn't returned with the past two weeks, the user is not very active - certainly if nothing within 4 weeks.

My key point is to get/insure the sponsors/admin's are looking at the accurate situation.

Check out

http://www.alliancefrancophone.org/getDC/

It has a listing of several distributed computing projects and lists the active CPU count (or their best guess based on the information available). It's interesting to see how much these numbers differ from the total number (which most projects such as UD cites).
