n00b questions!!!

Ok so here it is:

first, I know there are checkpoints, but how often do they occur?

second, I've been running my first task for 2 hours now and I'm still at 0%. Is this normal?? I mean I have a pretty fast pc and I'm wondering if anything is really being processed.

If it's taking this long just to get a single percent, am I going to have to wait a week before I even reach the first checkpoint?

Re: n00b questions!!!

Seems things are up again 16:42 CET.

hi TheMetz,

Please visit the Checkpoint Saving post in the Start Here forum. Depending on speed of PC it can take hours to reach a checkpoint, particular if it's hard to complete multiple attempts in a segment. HCMD (Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy) does sometimes take hours. Check the Taskmanager for a WCGxxxxxx.exe process to see it still accumulates CPU time.

What particular project are we talking and what agent (WCG agent or BOINC)

talk to u laeter

Re: n00b questions!!!

Hello TheMetz,
The check points are explained in Start Here at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=11332
As you can see, each project is different.
Which project are you running?
Have you turned the throttle up to 100%, as explained in http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2683#61655 ?

Lawrence

Re: n00b questions!!!

thanks. I checked out that thread and I don't think I've hit a checkpoint yet. Mostly I'm concerned with the fact that I've been running for over 2 and a half hours and I'm still at 0%. My throttle is at 60% right now, but I still have to use this machine for other things.

Re: n00b questions!!!

Hi TheMetz,

Even with the throttle at 100% you almost certainly won't notice any impact on the normal work you do on your PC. The agent really does just run when the processor can spare the time. All your other computing tasks work at a higher priority and always take precedence over the grid agent.

You'll see from my (and other) posts in the HCMD forum that this particular project does spend some significant time at 0%. Thereafter it fair gallops along!

David.
