Pole wakes up from 19-year coma

A Polish man has woken up from a 19-year coma to find the Communist party no longer in power and food no longer rationed, Polish TV reports.
Railway worker Jan Grzebski, 65, fell into a coma after he was hit by a train in 1988.

"Now I see people on the streets with mobile phones and there are so many goods in the shops it makes my head spin," he told Polish television.

He credits his survival to his wife, Gertruda, who cared for him.

Doctors gave him only two or three years to live after the accident.

A comatose patient is in a profound state of unconsciousness which renders them unaware of both self and the world around them, and from which they cannot be roused.

Although those in a coma do not respond to stimuli in a meaningful way, contrary to popular belief they do not always lie quiet and still - in some cases they can move, open their eyes and even talk. ,,,,,,,,,,

Hirst Covers Skull Cast in Diamonds

'For the love of God', a life size cast of a human skull in platinum by artist Damien Hirst is seen in this handout image released in London June 1, 2007. The Skull is covered by 8,601 pave-set diamonds weighing 1,106.18 carats.

Damien Hirst, former BritArt bad boy whose works infuriate and inspire in equal measure, did it again on Friday with a diamond-encrusted platinum cast of a human skull priced at a cool 50 million pounds.
The skull, cast from a 35-year-old 18th century European male, is coated with 8,601 diamonds, including a large pink diamond worth more than four million pounds in the centre of its forehead..........

Why did the chicken cross the sea?

Washington - A chicken bone found in Chile provides solid evidence to settle a debate about whether Polynesians travelling on rafts visited South America thousands of years ago - or vice versa, researchers said on Monday.

The DNA in the bone carries a rare mutation that links it to chickens in Tonga and Samoa, and radiocarbon dating shows it is around 600 years old - meaning it predates the arrival of Spanish conquerors in South America.

"These chickens are related to hens from Polynesia," said Alice Storey, a doctoral student at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, who worked on the study.

Her team's finding, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, suggests that best-selling author and adventurer Thor Heyerdahl was only partly right when he sailed on the raft Kon-Tiki from South America to Polynesia to prove prehistoric contact across the Pacific.

"He had it backwards," Storey said in a telephone interview..........

Re: Interesting News

"When I founded The Body Shop I just wanted a means to support myself and my two daughters. When I applied for a loan to start a small shop in1976, the man behind the desk looked as if I’d asked him to shave his head. A woman? Running a business? How preposterous, he obviously thought. My company went on to show how business can be done differently worldwide, proving that women can indeed run successful companies, and that these companies can have compassion —at heart instead of pure profit motive. Every real change, every revolutionary idea, every heartfelt gesture, whether it transforms one life or a thousand, was once seen as eccentric." This article by Anita Roddick, visionary founder of The Body Shop, shares more of her views on the valuable place of "crazy" ideas in our world.

It is good to see JP back in full stride. What was interesting is for a bit of time, I had more posts than you. Had me freak'in a bit. But now, I feel much more comfortable.

Looks like you will be back to 40k posts in no time.
