On this date in 1883, New York City's Metropolitan Opera House opened with a performance of Charles Gounod's Faust. Very quickly, the new opera house became the standard bearer. In 1966, the Metropolitan Opera Company moved to a new location at Lincoln Center. It premiered with Samuel Barber's Antony and Cleopatra, which was written especially for the occasion

In 1947, the United Nations General Assembly declared 24 October, the anniversary of the Charter of the United Nations, as which "shall be devoted to making known to the peoples of the world the aims and achievements of the United nations and to gaining their support for" its work
