May 17 1885:
For the second time in two years, the Apache chief Geronimo breaks out of an Arizona reservation, sparking panic among Arizona settlers. A famous medicine man and the leader of the Chiricahua Apache, Geronimo achieved national fame by being the last American Indian to surrender formally to the United States. For nearly 30 years, Geronimo and his followers resisted the attempts of Americans to take away their southwestern homeland and confine them to a reservation. He was a fearless warrior and a master of desert survival. The best officers of the U.S. Army found it nearly impossible to find Geronimo, much less decisively defeat him. |

May 20 in 1916, 1917, and 1918:
The small town of Codell, Kansas is struck by a tornado in 1916. Incredibly, the same town was also hit in 1917 and 1918 on the exact same date. The 1918 tornado was the most destructive, killing 10 people and damaging a large part of the town. |

May 23 1873:
The Federal Republic of Germany is established and the Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany (their constitution) is proclaimed. The Federal Republic of Germany was formed from the three Western Zones or Allied Zones of occupation held by the United States, the United Kingdom, and France. Bonn was selected as its capital city. |

May 25 1979:
On Friday afternoon, Memorial Day weekend, American Airlines Flight 191, a Los Angeles-bound DC-10, takes off at 3:03 p.m. from Chicago-O'Hare International airport with 271 aboard. As Flight 191 raised its nose during the initial stage of the takeoff, an engine under the left wing broke off with its pylon assembly and fell to the runway. The aircraft climbed to about 350 feet above the ground and then began to spin to the left, continuing its leftward roll until the wings were past the vertical position, with the nose pitched down below the horizon. Moments later, the aircraft crashed into an open field about a half-mile from its takeoff point, killing all 271 people aboard and two others in a nearby trailer park. It was the worst domestic air crash in U.S. history. |

June 6, 1944:
Operation Overlord, the code name for the invasion of northwest Europe during World War II by Allied forces begins with the Normandy Landings on 6 June 1944 (commonly known as D-Day). It is among the largest amphibious assaults ever conducted if not the largest itself. Nearly 160,000 troops crossed the English Channel on June 6. More than 3 million troops had landed by the end of August. |
