confused x64 version of BOINC 5.9.xx

Just to let everyone know that I tired the 64 bit version of bOINC, and while it could communicate with WCG--messages tab stated that the servers could not find "x86--64" or x64.
In other words I had to re-install the 5.8 version for windows.
Then again...the 64 bit version is beta--but I could not get it to run the project until I went back to the current "tested version."

Anyone else try this?

Original link was at www.start64.com under new software and BOINC...

Re: x64 version of BOINC 5.9.xx

Hi wabr101,
The odd numbered versions ( 5.5, 5.7. 5.9 . . .) of BOINC are alpha test beds for trying out tricky code. The even numbered versions ( 5.2, 5.4, 5.8 . . .) are intended for eventual release. Only try an odd version if you are signed up for alpha testing with BOINC, trying to help them find the bugs.

Work units contain embedded information for the platform they are intended to run on. knreed has to fix up a batch of work units for each platform that the WCG supports, which is a time-consuming part of the job when you consider all the different projects and supported platforms. I am uncertain just what sort of platform x64 for BOINC 5.9 is but it sounds as though we don't have any work units of that type.

Re: x64 version of BOINC 5.9.xx

This is the first official 64bit build, so it is even more "alpha" than usual. The developers have also been fiddling with the platform names, so it's not much surprise WCG won't send work.

I'll remind WCG to update the platform mappings once the names are stable.

Thanks for bringing this up, and trying out the alpha.

Re: x64 version of BOINC 5.9.xx

thank you for your prompt response.

as an ardent crunsher who appreciates WCG--i would like to see full 64 bit support.

i am aware that the math extensions are not needed to the nth degree, however, memory expansion beyond 4Gb under windows will help to speen further projects.

as we may remember--there was 8 bit, then 16, then 32...

i would like to see success asap

thank you for taking this seriously and please let me know if i can be of assistance...

Re: x64 version of BOINC 5.9.xx

In the next round or two of the alpha builds the BOINC client will start including 'alt-platform' tags. This will allow the x64 BOINC client to first request the 64 bit binary. However, if the 64 bit version isn't available then it will accept the 32 bit version and the server will send that. We have the code already on our servers that will process the 32bit tag and send the 32 bit version (since we do not have a 64 bit version available).

However, as is noted above - the 5.9.X versions are alpha and Berkeley expects there to be problems so only use it knowing that there will be problems.

Re: x64 version of BOINC 5.9.xx

Why isn't there a 64 bit linux version? Why isn't Boinc a supported program in the add/remove software? I am running a 64 bit version of Ubuntu. I recently download 7.04 and have not been able to get Boinc to attach to any projects. I tried ./boinc-attach_project and the only things it does is tell me no such file exist. I am in the right directory since chmod works. So I have to boot to 6.10 until I can solve this problem. Even there the programs will work only if it starts up at boot time. If the programs quits for any reason I have to reboot before it will attach to any project.

A speed of 3.02GHz per core doesn't mean that you have a total speed of 6.04GHz. You have two cores running at 3.02GHz. For example, if the BOINC benchmark says that your processor has 2000 floating point MIPS (Whetstone) per CPU and 4000 integer MIPS (Dhrystone) per CPU, you'll have a total of 4000 MIPS (whetstone) and 8000 MIPS (dhrystone) because your processor has two cores (assuming that both cores are utilized at 100%).

Re: x64 version of BOINC 5.9.xx

RicktheBrick, where are you getting BOINC from?

If you use Ubuntu, you can install BOINC using Synaptic. That is currently the best way, and I haven't heard of any problems using that method. Install boinc-client and boinc-manager, and you are all set.

Official 64bit builds are being added in the next release - there wasn't sufficient interest previously, and even with the 64bit build, you are likely to be running 32bit science from most projects (including WCG).

6.04 (2 X 3.02) is an effective speed.
both cores are being used at 100%
