Thanks retsof

Though I can create device profiles in Device Manage, none get registered. Nothing, not even a default config, shows up under the pink field headings on the Device Manager page, even with the picklists set at "anytime (all devices)".

Time to try BOINC, then?

The main difference is, if you have trouble with BOINC, we can poke around and debug it to find out exactly what is (or isn't) happening.

Off and running with BOINC, which downloaded, installed and connected without a hitch. Magnificent.

Thanks to all who recommended it, and especially to retsoff and Sekerob for their help in trying to overcome the UD problem.
