The latest trial version of BOINC (5.9.4) is now available at http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php
I am running v 5.9.3 under Win 2000, and it seems to be stable. I will try 5.9.4 shortly. Importantly, a bug in v 5.8.x affecting uploading results files to WCG seems to have been fixed. The bug was that some uploads would get stuck. These would time out and then be placed back on the "Upload Pending" queue, from where they would eventually be re-sent from scratch. If you have a broadband connection, you may not notice this, but I am on 56kbs dialup, so I had time to observe the slow progress of the Transfers queue. Happy crunching. |

Hi Rickjb
----------------------------------------This is very much ALPHA, NOT Beta and not recommended to run unless you know what you are doing and are prepared to report the problems at the BOINC development forum or their (bug) Trac system. All version numbering with an UNEVEN middle digit is ALPHA. With the middle digits even, it's Beta until Berkeley promotes it to Recommended. Even if, WCG is conservative in elevasting it's own distribution of BOINC to 'Recommended', pending any late discovered bugs. 5.8.x had three 'Recommended' releases for example! cheers

Aye!
Don't touch the alpha releases unless you are actually interested in alpha testing and reporting bugs. If you do alpha test, then you should be signed up for the boinc_alpha mailing list, where new versions are announced. There's no need to announce alpha stuff here, unless it really is of general interest. The alpha releases are pretty much guaranteed to be buggy, and new versions are released frequently. Normal users should use the recommended release from http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download |
