Re: Electricity cost of Grid?

If yours is really $.14 / KWH, I'd be very scared, my power bill is $250/mo, then if I used New York power, I would be paying over $1700 for the same amount of power.

Kunnis
Yup, I'm in New York City.

Can I write this off as a donation?

Re: Electricity cost of Grid?

Since computers run equally well with monitors turned off instead of on, what sort of schedule do you plan to run your monitors on? That will have a large effect on your power usage.
Alrighty, I set it up so that the monitors will shut off after 20 mins no use; that will mean the monitors are off about 60% of the time.

Why not use the power switch on the front of the monitor?

smile Re: Electricity cost of Grid?

I looked up my computer and it says that the cpu uses about 81 watts. I use an AMD Athlon XP 3000+ cpu, so I guess you could add up the monitor and other good stuff and end up with about 250w to 500w depending if you use it a LOT or just let the comp run to have it crunch... that's my guess anyways... smile

cool Off Topic: Light Bulbs for High Cost Electrical Power Areas

Dkrypt, I am horrified at 14 ¢ per kilowatt•hour. This last decade they have finally started selling compact fluorescent replacements for incandescent bulbs. The new fluorescents use the expensive electric ballasts with a steady, non-flickering light unlike the cheap magnetic ballasts used for tubes which flicker and give off a 60-cycle hum. These fluorescents use little more than a quarter of the power of an incandescent bulb.

The remaining problem is the color of the light. The color temperature of natural light is very warm, while incandescent light is very cool. The trouble is that some people (me and Dad, for example) really prefer natural light while others (Mom and Big Sister) really prefer cool light, no matter how much logic and common sense we brought to bear on them. [Grin] So a large variety of color temperatures are listed in catalogs today, to suit individual preferences, such as: 2700 Kelvin, 3500 Kelvin, 4100 Kelvin and 5100 Kelvin. Oh yes, interior designers get their terminology wrong and call 2700 Kelvin warm and 5100 Kelvin cool. Looking at the catalog reminded me of this.

Here is an online catalog in my Favorites that I order light bulbs from:

Re: Electricity cost of Grid?

Whoa there folks! $0.14!!!!!! $0.23.5!!!!!!
My Bill for 64 winter days is 8,475KWH (3 roomies) @ $0.080070 perKWH =
$678.59 (+4.5%citytax) (Next to free?)
My E bill is the Limiting factor for me.
I still think that we need to "form" a nonprofit that uses
the "Total Runtime" -vs.- a predetermined "Run cost" as the factor for
figuring a "measured" Write off in KWH. (for issuing Annual Receipts. )
Going to our Govt's here may get us the Real info on rules and starting up.
I don't see why we need the WCG to do more than they already are.
We are donating to a non profit. That makes it a write off. The issue is Proof.
If we do it through "Our own nonprofit" that would further document our efforts.
The issues as I see it are about coming up with verifiable value
that will be accepted by a Tax Auditor. To start off suggesting that there is
no hope is simply not my usual way. This issue is important for the long run.
Positive input till the Ax truly falls on this should be the rule here. (Naysayers be real, or beware!)

I believe we can do this! (in the USA)
Robert
