Re: Is my computer a malicious user?!

I'm looking through your results for this computer and there appears to be something unusual for your computer. Here is an example:

On a FightAIDS@Home workunit here are the cpu time and claimed credit for the three results in the quorum (the granted credit for the job was 60.1):

5.3 hours 58.3
11.1 hours 69.8
3.3 hours 52.1

The 5.3 hour result was returned by a AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ with 3GB of RAM.

The 11.1 hour result (yours) was run on a Intel(R) CPU T2500 @ 2.00GHz with 2GB of RAM.

The 3.3 hour result was returned by a Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU @ 2.66GHz with 2 GB of RAM.

The fact that your computer took 11.1 hours to run the result while the other computers ran it much faster (it should be in the same ballpark with the AMD) suggests that something is slowing down your computer. Does this computer use other applications that use up most of the memory?

Re: Is my computer a malicious user?!

Another workunit - this time Genome Comparison:

The granted credit was 14.9. The three results in the quorum had cpu time and claimed credit as follows:

2.9 hours 18.5
1.5 hours 15.1
1.8 hours 11.1

The 2.9 hours computer was yours - Intel(R) CPU T2500 @ 2.00GHz with 2GB of RAM
The 1.5 hour computer was a Intel(R) CPU T2250 @ 1.73GHz with 1.5GB of RAM.
The 1.8 hour computer was a Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.20GHz with 1.2 GB of RAM.

Something is definitely causing your computer to run the work much more slowly then other computers.

Re: Is my computer a malicious user?!

As indicated by the Windows Task Manager at the moment:

wcg_faah... CPU 49, Mem Usage 101,800K
wcg_faah(2)... CPU 49, Mem Usage 93,744K

There are quite a few processes (45) but most of them are at CPU 0 and less than 10,000K Mem Usage.

Physical memory
total: 2095020
available: 1244632

I'm not sure this information is relevant, but if you need anything specific I'd be happy to provide it.

Most of the time, I'm am not on the computer while it works on the units. When I'm there, I'm usually working with multiple applications such as Word/Excel/Firefox and a couple other programs, but nothing really demanding as far as I know.

Re: Is my computer a malicious user?!

It's probably worth checking your cache, and maybe your memory, too. The benchmark will fit into L1 cache, so if there is something wrong with your L2 cache, you will crunch slowly, but benchmark normally.

Have a look in your BIOS just to make sure.

Are you hyperthreading? If so, you may want to limit yourself to one process, so you don't experience contention. There are some unresolved issues with hyperthreading and benchmarks.

Re: Is my computer a malicious user?!

- The BIOS was flashed about 6 months ago; it is not, however, the latest version.

- Hyperthreading? (Not on purpose if I am doing it since I do not know what that is; the computer is working on two faah units at the same time...(?) )

I then did two things

(1)
I download and ran CPUZ:

BEFORE
Processor(s)
Number of processors 1
Number of cores 2 per processor
Number of threads 2 (max 2) per processor

(2) I then followed some instructions on some website:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=60416

And ran CPUZ again. Notice core speed & multiplier (which have double). Now I have no idea if that did anything but it seems it cannot have made the situation worse(?)

Re: Is my computer a malicious user?!

The particular CPU knreed identified earlier has no HT. If CPUZ during running 2 projects shows 2 ghz cycles for the CPU, it is fine. If it showed 1ghz, it would explain the doubling of the processing time compared to the other CPU's in the quorum. That could happen on throttled CPU's of particular laptops with temperature sensitive switching. You can control the speed with the Speedstep software or the BIOS.

The second test running at 2ghz would appear after pausing BOINC for a few minutes. Anyway, you have a cycle control issue to resolve by the looks of it.

cheers

Re: Is my computer a malicious user?!

As I was saying in my first post "I guess there is no point fixing anything as any lower claim by my computer will only result in a lower average for everyone."

CLAIMED / GRANTED
44.7 / 46.9
87.6 / 96.9
53.1 / 55.3
79.0 / 83.9
10.1 / 10.1
11.7 / 11.2
11.8 / 12.1
59.4 / 62.0
66.5 / 76.1
60.4 / 69.0
71.5 / 80.1

etc.

These are Genome and FAAH units. It seems to be working quite well now. That being said, I am making less points nowadays, obviously! devilish

Re: Is my computer a malicious user?!

Whatever you did doubled the speed of your computer. You may be claiming less per work unit but you should be turning in twice as many work units each day!

biggrin
