Hi Graham and frans,
Wedding plans are going full steam ahead! My guys and I got fitted for tuxes on the weekend so thats out of the way now! btw frans, my fiance is of Dutch decent, her folks were both born in Holland. A friend of mine married a Dutch-Canadian last year and our inside joke is we are breeding out the Dutch. Don't worry though, my fiance has 2 brothers, one of which just had a son, and her sister is currently dating a Van der Hayden!****Canada Members**** - I will be working the afternoon shift for the next 2 weeks so any help bumping this thread during the evening is much appreciated! Thanks in advance! Later all, Ripcat |

Well, I'm still working hard on the work unit I mentioned above. 51 hrs of crunching and still only 61% complete!
Looking at our stats it would seem we all have some huge WUs crunching away. I wonder if I can crunch it faster if I put the computer outside. Anyone know if -12 degrees Celsius will harm my computer? Can I spray it down with de-icer? Ah well, time to put a few more logs on the fire! ![]() |

Although putting your computer outside at -12C would cool off your CPU and improve CPU performance it would not be good for your hard drive. I believe -12C is below the manufacture's recommended operating tempature.

For my hard drive, a Hitachi 250 gb IDE drive, the manufacture's recommended operating tempature is in the range of 5C to 55C. See the attached link:

so, like, good day, eh? I'm a Canuck exiled to NY until summer.
----------------------------------------It's going to be awhile before you get a result from me. I averaged 17 hours/result for my first 4, but the one I'm on now looks like it'll take another 2 weeks The good news is that I defected from Team Slashdot ![]()

Hi Dreamshaper, glad you could join us! It's too bad you only made it as far south as NY because it's cold there too!
Hi Larry, 5C isn't going to cut it. Know of any hard drives that meet military specifications for operation in sub-zero temperatures? Hi Graham, stay away from my bottom, my fiance can get real jealous! ![]() Drop in, Join up, Drive safe! Ripcat |

I think Hitachi makes some 20 to 60 gigabyte hard drives designed for use in automobiles and industry. Perhaps other manufacturers do the same, but I do not know for sure. These hard drives are designed for harsh environments (extreme hot and cold tempatures, vibrations and dust). I do not know what kind of interface they have or where they can be obtained (perhaps through automotive parts suppliers or automobile dealers) and I do not know the cost. Military spec hard drives are very expensive (if you can find one) due to stricter specifications. Perhaps flash memory can be substituted for a hard drive. They did that on the Mars rover and that operates in a very cold environment. I think if you tried to operate an ordinary hard drive in -12C you might run into problems, such as the lubercants inside the drive's motor may not perform well enough to protect against excessive wear. Also, the cold might affect the delicate metal parts such that they might contract to a point where they would not function properly, such as the moving heads.
