I have recently thought of a neat project idea that I would like to see computed by the World Community Grid. Some may not agree that it would be a beneficial project for humanity but I think it is arguable. My problem is I am not currently doing research on the idea but I do believe it would be something beneficial to scientists and humans in the future.
My idea is to compute the affects of possible ways to terraform Mars and Venus to make them inhabitable by humans. I think that it would be possible to gather together some scientists that might be interested in the research and in the future we could benefit from this research. Just wondering what you all think of the idea. If I get a positive response I may start a website and try to gather together scientists interested in this type of research and eventually build a proposal for World Community Grid. |

Strangely enough, there aren't all that many terraforming scientists here. Perhaps you should ask somewhere else if you are serious about this.
If you are not serious about this, then better not to annoy serious terraforming scientists with half an idea. If they need massive computing power, and have a proposal, then I'm sure they will find WCG. |

It is not so much that it is half of an idea, I just thought I would get feedback before I put to much time into formulating a clear direction. I think ClimatePrediction.net proves that there is a use for this kind of computing power since they follow the same idea. Anyhow, I wouldn't bug a scientist until I had a clear idea, direction and was positive that the idea is useful to someone. I simply wanted feedback before putting an extensive amount of time into this.

If you aren't a scientist, then you don't have a chance. Real research simply doesn't happen that way. You don't start by saying "crunching Mars would be cool". It starts with a scientist saying "I can get funding for this Martian study, but it's going to need a lot of computing that we can't afford".
The problem comes first. Always. So, to save yourself potential embarrassment, please don't approach any scientists. They won't be polite. |

Alright well that is all I needed to know. I wasn't expecting such a rude response for my enthusiasm in grid computing but I guess you got your point across.

And here was me trying to save you embarrassment. Sorry. But really, there's no nice way of deflating an idea.

If there were any reflections on the matter it would have been at NASA, but they are closing down their think tank. Funny that i was just reading about masses of frozen water under an Martian pole then thinking of a Total Recall movie with Arnold and the machine that thawed the frozen storage.

You might try the CPDN boards to see if anyone there has an interest. They are at least running planetary modeling similations there. However the similation they are running is very complex and very specific, therefore may not be adaptable to other planets.

On a slightly helpful note, I suggest looking at http://distributedcomputing.info/index.html and then clicking on Active Projects, Upcoming Projects, and Conferences. Conferences can take you to bulletin boards where people are discussing potential distributed computing projects.
Best to read for a while before breaking in and making suggestions.Lawrence |
