Unable to register

I have installed on a new home computer running windows vista (an option not included on your list) and am unable to register. Error message is 'Unable to connect to Grid Server. Please try again. If you are using a proxy server, please verify the settings with your network administrator'.
Do I just give up or is there a solution?

Re: Unable to register

Hi Rowland

..... Well giving up is way to easy to dismiss the 'All Hands on Deck' need for as many crunchers to join in the fight against diseases.... the computational way :D

Vista is very new and the technicians are preparing for a write up on how to install on this OS. Essentially the securities of Vista are particular if WCG(UD) agent is installed into the C:\program files directory. Take the same download and reinstall on a different drive or outside the 'program files' directory group like D:\World Community Grid\. I've no Vista, but if u search this forum, you find that this will work. Running as administrator is not recommended as each time you boot you'd have to re-apply the permission and run risk of work in progress damage.

If you run Vista, you probably have a dual core computer. Than running BOINC allows you to run 2 jobs simultaneous. Get it from the below link, bottom radio button for BOINC.... again, install outside the 'Program Files' directory group.

cheers

Re: Unable to register

I'd like to try one or both of your suggestions but first I need to know how to uninstall the unsuccessful version. It does not appear in the list of programs to uninstall in the control panel but there are entries in the registry so the install must have been at least partly successful.
Any suggestions would be welcome.

Re: Unable to register

That's unusual as users should be able to install software. Don't worry about it sitting where it is, just go into Explorer as Administator and find the WCG folder in 'program files' and delete. Then remove the short-cut from the auto-run startup folder of the startup menu.

Reinstall and insist on changing the location. The fact that u got into the registry shows u'r hands-on. The new install will amend the existing registry entries (my bet if it works same as WXP pro).

Re: Unable to register

I have found by accident that rerunning the install program after installation uninstalls world community grid.
Installing the windows program in a directory c:\worldcommunitygrid rather that c:\program files still results in being unable to register.
Losing faith now, will wait until program has been shown to work with Vista.

Re: Unable to register

Many Many apps have not been migrated to be 'Vista Fit'. That's what MS forgot to report when they prematurely dumped Vista onto the market to get cashflow and guinee pig millions so they can boast about how quick they were with SP1 with money in the bank.

Many have though gone before you and put testimonials out on these fora on the different ways they got UD agent working (which has not been Vista formally tested or certified). As alternate and much more up to date and definitely tested by the developers on (pre) releases of Vista is BOINC 5.8.15. Give that a go. Again many have reported successful running on Vista even on Beta's on these fora.

Re: Unable to register

Thankyou for you're assistance. Standard installation of BOINC is now running successfully with Vista.
