I don't have an air compressor, but do use a can of compressed air and an unused paint brush to clean my machines periodically (three cats leads to LOTS of dust in my computers). Anyway, I've found my trusty paint brush to be a GREAT tool for cleaning, it gets in all the nooks and crannies that can't be easily reached, there's no worry of scratching anything, and it's very affordable :)

Hi smcclarigan, everyone.
My two Pesos... (First! I think the best way to keep your Cruncher clean is to get it off of the dusty Carpet.) I use two Brushes that I re-recruited for the Job. {Use a Ground Strap! They're Cheep. Scotch Tape and wire will do in an emergency too!} The first Brush I like is a "tiny"8mm-soft Camel hair. I use it AND a Small Flash Light to clean around the mother boards and cards. The second is a nylon stiffie. It collects the hard crud off the fan edges and such. I don't care for compressed air and would never take a customers machine "Outside to clean it". LOL I take the time to go thru and brush and suck out the box. Spotless. I'd save the compressed air for the Air Conditioners and under the Ice Box. "I have personally Killed more PC parts than most" and have learned some form it. (I hope!) Again, I think that blasting crud around in a pc is the Lazy way to clean one. My opinion but what will you get after YEARS of that? Crud. Having said that I want also to say that Most of the PC users I have met should not be allowed any where near the inside of their PCs! (I know that's not you folks! lol) So if your going to get in there...........Compressed air or not.. And your not a PC Guru! Bring your sense of humor and a... Static Strap! (Grounding Strap!) Static Strap! Static Strap! Robert |

Bumping up this thread, because in a newspaper article just recently, dust was reported to actually be a major cause of airflow disruption and thus overheating in many seasoned computers, as well as asthma among computer users.
Dust also makes fans ALOT noisier (overnight crunchers beware) and sticks in the greasing of moving parts, slowing down fans and floppy/cd-rom drives. A dust free computer operates far more smoothly and silently than a dirty computer. Plus, you'll feel good after cleaning your system. Caution: Never use a wet cloth to clean a computer's internal parts. Use a vacuum cleaner in preference to a brush. |
