I had this grid idea years ago, except rather than make a grid for all sorts of high minded science that will unlikely yield any real advantage in our lifetime, why not use a grid that can actually be of direct benefit to you.
You'll only care about this if you're a software developer.... http://deadpelican.com/theinternetportal.html Now my website isn't all fancy, and I'm not big on front ends, but I grid my machines together and it works very well... Wouldn't it be USEFUL to be on a grid of gcc compilers? Want to build some huge project without waiting a day for it? I've built software that allows distcc to work on a grid. Join the grid and your compiles run in parallel. Sounds a bit more useful than folding proteins. |

Look at all the different didtributed computer projects at http://distributedcomputing.info/projects.html
And these are just public projects on the Internet. There are many more private projects of many types. |

You are entitled to your opinion. It is not on I share.
----------------------------------------There are a few contradictions and absurdities in your ramblings. First off, you rubbish the concept of the existing grid computing thet we do here as "high minded science that will unlikely yield any real advantage in our lifetime" and invite me to "use a grid that can actually be of direct benefit to you {me}" Then you say "You'll only care about this if you're a software developer...." 99.9% of the population (self included now) are not software developers. Limited scope then for the kind of mass grid effort that you envisage. I read about 50% of your web page, but as you admit yourself there is little original there. Wheels, P2P, Grid computing... Your wheel idea seems the most original and promising - but I hope you have not copped out and just opted for the obvious ROUND solution. I could point you at some links to explain the value of the "high minded science" but as you admit, you are not widely read and are therefore unlikely to take any notice. You had a point with "unlikely yield any real advantage in our lifetime" - though not the selfish one you intended. Unfortunately, many do not have enough lifetime left for the pace of medical science. But I am sanguine that the terminally ill will take comfort from the fact that you can do a quick compile of their software for them before they go. My father died of Cancer many years ago. If he got his cancer today, he would have a much better chance. I lost some freinds to Aids in the early days. Those who contract HIV today have a lot more hope. All of this through drug development. So there are uses for "Folding proteins". Dont YOU have anyone to care about? No one here minds posts showing other worthy grid projects, if it is done without devalueing existing projects. LH pointed us at some. Here is one I consider worthy - www.malariacontrol.net. Do it your way and you will hit peoples sensitivities, as you certainly hit mine. The nautical phrase "Weigh Anchor" comes to mind. Go on, say it fast! I'll go now before I really start to rant, and get Nelsoc'd. ![]() ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by Dirk Gently at Mar 11, 2007 11:07:43 AM] |

Dirk..... Gently ;>)
----------------------------------------When first seeing the OP, classed it as not belonging in this forum. ( If the CA's could they would move these items to a Spam Can or the Chat Room, where it belonged from the get go, but we can't.... we have a designated Moderator for the double check.... maybe it does get nelsoc'd to other places :O Have a good day

Oh, come on - if your code takes that long to compile, either it's horrible code, or you work for a large company with more than adequate resources to run their own internal compile farm.
----------------------------------------There are many other applications for grid computing, and they are ALL being explored. From render-grids to massive general purpose computing grids, they already exist. THIS grid project is about humanitarian computing. It's our entire reason for being. We expect to see results, and useful results, soon. Not instantly, of course. WCG isn't about instant gratification. But soon. To be quite blunt, I don't quite understand your idea, and if my interpretation of it is correct, then it's unworkable and not needed. However, it's quite possible I misunderstood. Want to have another go at explaining it? edit: Okay, I have read your proposal in depth. My first impressions are more than confirmed - you are proposing the biggest bot-net in history, and you have failed to research all the many existing solutions. Sorry, you are wasting your time. There is a reason why nearly all grid systems are client-server not p2p. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Mar 11, 2007 7:16:29 PM] |

No such thing as bad press, I always say. .... Are you sure? Ask GERALD RATNER http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerald_Ratner The ensuing publicity was so bad, sales plummeted, he resigned, and the company renamed itself. Although, I presume you would not make the same admission as Gerald ("total Cr@p"). ![]() |
