i am new to linux coming from macs. I know zero command line stuff - yes what am I doing with linux? I am running ubuntu 6.10 on laptop 1 GB ram.
I am lost as to where to put the downloaded little file and how to change the directory in the command line correctly to where I end up putting this file and also how to do the rest to set this up. I also need additional help tweaking the running app so I do not overheat my machine and can set run time or whatevere I need to tweak. thank you. Please be patient with me and I would like to get this running. |

Hello graywizard,
Somebody else will have to give you step-by-step instructions. But right now there is a bug in the throttle code used by BOINC that causes errors in Linux unless you set the throttle to 100%. Lawrence |

WCG has an instruction sequence which should appear after the download:
----------------------------------------For Firefox: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/viewThan...linux&browser=firefox For Internet Explorer: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/viewThan...Pick=linux&browser=ie General http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/viewThankYouBoinc.do If still not getting anywhere, follow this link to the unofficial BOINC wiki. http://boinc-wiki.ath.cx/index.php?title=Inst..._Client_Software_on_Linux As i understand it, following the WCG download gives simplified sign on and also a WCG skin on the SIMPLE VIEW GUI. Maybe another Linux running member steps up to the plate for further assistance.

Please ignore the other advice. BOINC want to simplify the Linux installation, so the "best practice" is changing.
The easiest way to use BOINC on Ubuntu is to install it using the apt packages. apt-get update apt-get install boinc-client boinc-manager Then use BOINC Manager to attach to WCG. Please ask if you need more detailed instructions. |

D. presume you are going to advise WCG staff that their install pages are 'still' to be ignored or updated?

BOINC are still working on getting the ports up to date and better supported.
Meanwhile, I know that the Ubuntu port works brilliantly, and is far easier than doing it all manually. |
