I am a college(Nankai University, Tianjin) student in China and I'm keen on joining the WCG programme.
But I am not the computer's Administrator, the WCGAgent seems not available under a power user or a normal user. If anybody has some suggestion, plz contact me. E-mail:destiny1984@163.com or destinyy1984@yahoo.com.cn MSN:destinyy1984@msn.com Thanks! |

If your system meets the requirements listed in http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/join_now/system_requirements.html then you should suspect a connection problem and read through these three pages:
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/join_now/network_settings.html http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/join_now/connecting_to_the_server.html http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/join_now/agent_paused.html The third page suggests speaking with the computer system administrator, which is really important if you do not own the computer. If this is your personal computer, then first wonder about the Internet security programs on it. For example, we know of a problem with McAfee VirusScan version 8.0 Lawrence |

Lawrence, i think he means something else
What you can try to do is when the computer boots try to start windows in safe mode. Then you can log in with the account 'administrator' if it isn't locked. You should be able to install the program in here and let the program run as a service so nobody can see it's running Grtz |

Hi techies,
my problem under w2k is that under the administrator logged in the Agent runs smoothly, under the normal user with limited privileges I am getting the message Unable to process Task data. Backing off ... Anybody knows where the task data is located and how could all users crunch the same data? Thanks Ivang |

Hmm that's strange ...
You can try and let it run as a service with a tool like firedeamon? Maybe the normal users are not allowed to write files to program files or something? I really don't know |

Hi Ivang
----------------------------------------You usually get this message when a Work Unit is finished and it requests a connection to WCG to upload the results If it cannot make a connection it usually tells you it is backing off and will continue to try until a connection is made to allow it to upload results and download a new work unit Check your Internet Connection permissions under Administerator to see if this is causing you the problem with connecting itself to upload completed Work Units Regards <GRAHAM> [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Dec 29, 2004 2:48:25 PM] |

Hi, Ivang.
I have never heard anyone give a complete answer to this problem except to run the WCG Agent as a service as in this thread: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=217#1190 On my computer I simply installed the directory WorldCommunityGrid in my Program Files directory. But what would have happened if I had installed it into Shared Documents instead and put the Shortcut into the All Users Start Menu? Would that result in one instance of the Agent running no matter which user was signed on and storing the temporary results to the same temporary file which all Users could access? Or would something go wrong? Lawrence |

Somebody from IBM or UD needs to address this issue. I had the same problem with my first computer and fiddled around with it until I got it working.
----------------------------------------On my first computer, I first installed world community under my administrator account since you can't installed the program under a restricted user account. The program wouldn't work under my restricted user account (backing off error), so I uninstalled the program and deleted the world community folder, changed my restricted user account to an administrator account long enough to re-install world community and then changed the account back to a restricted user account. That took care of the problem. So my deduction was you needed to install the program under the account you wished to run under. However, today I tried to install the program on my second computer. Being the smart guy I thought I was, I changed my restricted user account to an administrator account and installed the program. I let the first work unit run til it reached 2 percent, then changed the account back to a restricted user account, and wham...getting the backing off error. Both computers have the same internet access, firewall settings and folder access privileges by account. I don't understand why one works and one doesn't. I thought I would let the first wu run under administrator and change the account back to restricted user on the second wu and see if that works, thinking maybe some file needs to be written first (I think that happened on my first computer before I started fiddling with it). But I'm thinking there are possibly some companies that don't allow users to install programs on their pc and some poor administrator does not want to figure out this problem on their own. IBM or UD should provide administrators with proven install procedures for letting the program run under restricted accounts. Hope this makes sense. It makes a lot of sense to me, family. Your system manager has a lot of tools potentially available to protect the computers. It sounds to me as though you should talk with the manager next year.
Happy New Year!! Lawrence |

Thanks Lawrence. I was hoping that since your a community administrator you might have some special communication path to IBM to alert them to this issue.
