I'm looking at buying/building a new PC mainly for running a Java program for my PhD on XP. I know java and fast are oxymorons so please don't flame me over that. It's CPU intensive. I already know I'm going to get 2GB of ram because of price limitations. Upgrading to 4GB is just too $$$$.
----------------------------------------Since the non-Linux grid programs can only use a single core on multicore systems I figure it'd be a good measure to guide my purchase. So if people post their performance and system configuration I'd greatly appreciate it! If someone knows a site that compares the scientific calculation performance or FPC of available processors that'd be great! Thanks! Hi csmark92
----------------------------------------It's the FPU that's all important but as a mainly AMD man I'm biased. We have one Core 2 Duo but it doesn't get the benchmarks you would expect. I'm sure there are many more qualified out there to speak on the subject btw just in case you were not aware there are BOINC flavours for both Windows and Intel based Mac's (as well as Linux) Each of these will utilise as many cores as you allow in your device config on the WCG site. It's only the UD agent that is confined to a single core and Windows. Sound like an impressive box of tricks you are planning there Happy Crunching Dave ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by David Autumns at Feb 22, 2007 4:36:57 PM] |

To All
----------------------------------------Whilst it is strictly a personal decision, we recommend not to email anyone unless the destination is confirmed. Similarly it's not recommended posting email addresses unless they have been 'deformed' so that they become non- machine readable. To csmark92, dont know who told u, but the Windows BOINC client can run on as many CPU cores as u can squeeze in a box. Some posts are on this forum comparing CPU's, mostly thru benchmark values. cheers

csmark92,
----------------------------------------One site you could try is Tom's Hardware at http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html There are quite a number of comparisons there. Good luck Cheers Sgt.Joe Minnesota Crunchers
