Member Tip SR 02-06: What to Include when Reporting an Agent Running Problem

This is a work in progress, capturing ideas for incorporation into an error reporting form.... agent focussed at this time. Feel free to add suggestions on this particular subject including proposals if things are not "layman" enough:

Problem reporting for the Client performing the Science computations:
    General::
  • When did u first observe the problem:
  • What client is running, WCG(UD) or BOINC (+version):
  • Device / Computer ID... a 5 or 6 digit number found in "V" screen or message log:
  • What Mode it is run in (Single User, Shared User, Service, Screensaver):
  • What WCG Science project(s) and Version cause problems (See note IV)
  • Operating System (OS) and version:
  • Update level like SP1/3:
  • Where is the Agent installed / Run from (e.g. Default location or other drive):
  • Was the OS changed, with Work In Progress in the Agent directory:
  • Is the system clock current ddmmyy:hhmm?:
  • Anti Virus program and version and when were libraries last auto-updated:
  • Software Firewall and version:
  • Spam filter if any and version and when were libraries last auto-updated:
  • What type of computer is the project run on (Laptop, Desktop, Server):
  • CPU brand, type, speed (See note III):
  • Ram Size and type e.g. 512mb, DDR2 (See note III):
  • Missing Graphics. Video card and status of drivers including OpenGL (are they up to date?):
  • Were Hard-/Software changes made to the computer recently to include Overclocking:
  • Were Hard-/Software integrity tests done recently, particular after above point (See note III):
  • Networking Setup: Router? Static/Dynamic IP, NAT and In-build Firewall Active?:
  • ISP (modem dial up, ADSL, ISDN, ADSL2, Cable):
  • Are you using a Proxy? What type (SOCK, HTTP)?:
  • What type of Authentication does it use?:
    WCG(UD) Agent:
  • Have you got multiple copies of WCG(UD) agent installed on your computer i.e. copy also from Grid.org?:
  • Have you verified that copies of UDTAPI.DLL only exist in the WCG(UD) program directory?:
    BOINC Agent:
  • Copy and past of the quorum detail for the problem work unit(s) which can be found at Result Status
The descriptions can be found at ......, what the XYZ means.:
  • Provide relevant portions of Messages (tab) & Error logs:
All messages are found in the stdoutdae.txt and stderrdae.txt files stored in BOINC program directory. Include 5-10 lines from before and after after the problem message
  • Are u attached to other Distributed Computing projects and do they run successfully?:
    Other:
  • 3rd party Add-Ons like UDmon or BOINCview:
  • Screen-Print(s)..... Pictures tell a 1000 words if hard to explain (See note I):
  • Anything else you feel relevant:
    Website, Forum & Statistics
  • Have you signed-in with same Member name as the devices are register to (Missing Points)?:
  • What browser Firefox, Opera, Safari, IE7*, IE6* (* OS integrated for Windows):
  • Is your regular Internet Browser also the Default Browser?:
  • Did you clean out the Cookie and Webpage Caches?:
  • Did you research the problem in Help & use Search? Did u find a similar issue (See note II):
  • Provide link to post(s) that have a close description to your problem:
  • Did a idea come on after working thru this Q&A:

For BOINC, look in the message log file "stdoutdae.txt" for anything that is related to the invalid Work Unit error like memory alerts... disk or ram and copy past into your post.

For other On-Line assistance:

Ideally we would have a formal error reporting tool, that would flow into a Knowledge Base (KB), but that's dreamworld for now. The idea is to copy past the Questionnaire into a post and add the information behind it, so we all know which items of interest have been completed. Maybe we could get a permanent error reporting link to the form in the Forum header section once fully matured? (hint hint)

We thank u for completing the form, sharing ideas for improvement in this thread and posting the Q&A with your issue query including any screen-prints. You can send us the form, use copy/paste with any screen-prints thru a Contact_Us email. It will assist the support staff, who will endeavour to provide a response as soon as technically possible. Be patient as a reply can take a few days. In the meantime read the fora, as a problem sometimes does not come alone and more members might experience the same issue momentarily.

Re: Member Tip SR 02-06: What to Include when Reporting an Agent Running Problem

It would be nice to be able to search within specific forums. Nothing too pressing or urgent, but helpful to further pinpoint a thread that a user knows exists but didn't think they needed at the time they first read it (and as a result, they didn't bookmark it or add it to their watch list).
For example, if I enter into the Genome Comparison forum from the Index, any searching I do with the handy bar up top returns results from every forum.
Now, better searching can always be accomplished via better key term choices. However, a simple radio button labeled "Search only within this forum" would further narrow searches. Like stated above, this isn't a urgent demand, just perhaps eventually should get done if others agree with me.

Hello moped12,
The 3rd line in Search is 'In Category/Forum'. Use the drop down menu to select the forum you want to search in. The default is 'All forums'.

Re: Member Tip SR 02-06: What to Include when Reporting an Agent Running Problem

Hi lawrencehardin,
Thanks. I guess I never tried the Search link on the bar. In my post, I was refering to the box on the right, located under the "Help" button. However, the search link seems to satisfy the need to look within a specific forum. Thanks again

Have added few questions related to WCG(UD) Agent (potential conflict due multiple copies of e.g. UDTAPI.DLL.)

A newest copy v. 2.19: And still a work in progress, capturing ideas for incorporation into an error reporting form.... agent focussed at this time.
