Slow FCG Work Units

My computer's been crunching only fcg units this week and it takes about 1 - 1.5 hours to finish one unit. I noticed that the remaining units (with report deadlines on Feb 9) took a longer time than the other units. It took almost 3 hours to finish units 10000693 and 10000694.

Re: Slow FCG Work Units

This is probably normal. There are bigger and smaller genes in the Human Genome, so if a unit is composed of bigger genes it should take longer to crunch it.

Re: Slow FCG Work Units

i'm not sure, but i think it's not the different genes that make a WU longer or not, but the complexity of the proteins of those genes that are compared...
could be wrong...

Re: Slow FCG Work Units

On a single box I've had run times of 1:16 to 3:40 hours for the Genome project. Not all pack the equal amount of work. It's how its being chopped up in the libraries that we're crunching thru and what is compared with what.

Other projects indeed have a complexity tag to them. Anyway, it's normal for work to vary in length. Where to look is A. Do they get to 100%, B. Does it get returned C.. Do you get Credit. If so, all is fine.

Re: Slow FCG Work Units

Workunits can finish, but I still see a wild variation in length. My slowest computer has been very well behaved over the last 2 weeks. Suspending network activity is also helpful when not actually sending in anything. Workunits complete in 3-5 hours.

ON THE OTHER HAND, the current nasty one is at 25 hours and has made it to 88%. It may be time for a reboot. This could also be a symptom of the Win98 memory leaks piling up.

The faster AMD 2.4GHz machines here can run a GC in 1/2 to 1 hour.

This is a screen shot of my slowest machine results. It is a 497 mhz PII. I would not be too worried. Even the small GC jobs take a long time on a slow machine. Double digit hours are not too uncommon.

Cheers

Re: Slow FCG Work Units

We're at about the same place. The 500 MHz machine was fading as it had been running for a week. I'll watch the benchmarks more carefully.

Before

22 MIPS floating (Whetstone)
38 MIPS integer (Dhrystone)

and after a reboot

417 MIPS floating (Whetstone)
708 MIPS integer (Dhrystone)

2.4GHz AMD machines
6/14/2007 8:57:32 AM|| 2286 floating point MIPS (Whetstone) per CPU
6/14/2007 8:57:32 AM|| 4057 integer MIPS (Dhrystone) per CPU
