Problem w/ Norton 2007?

I kept having a problem with Norton 2007. The auto-protect feature would turn itself off. Long story short, Symantec support was next to worthless, so I started turning of various programs and peripherals that come up at start up. I did so in a systematic fashion in turn off only one device or program at a time. The one the finally got Norton working again - World Community Grid Agent.

This seems very strange considering how common Norton Internet Security is, but it did work. Anyone else have trouble running Norton Internet Security w/ the Grid Agent? Found a better resolution than turning it off/uninstalling?

The problem was on a work PC that I upgraded from an older version of Inet Security to 2007. A home PC running an older version of Norton & Grid doesn't seem to have any problem.

Anyway, any help would be great. I would really like to be able to run Grid on this box. Thank you.

Re: Problem w/ Norton 2007?

Hello ZABA77,
Anti-virus programs are peculiar. The first thing to try is the easiest - switch from the UD client to the BOINC client ( http://www.wcgwiki.org/en/boinc/migration.cfm ). A program that objects to one will rarely worry about the other.

or...switch the antivirus program.

The AVG free antivirus program has had no problems with EITHER the UD interface or BOINC interface.

It had been working for me for a couple of years.

AVG also gives out daily updates from the internet to keep things current.

Re: Problem w/ Norton 2007?

Be careful with even hinting doubts of Norton or u get your ears waxed over elsewhere. McAfee.... the full military avoidance ops required....(strictly personal ROFL)..... My set is Alwil Avast and NOD32 for the viral/trojan/spam stuff, Spybot and Ad-Aware for the spam stuff periodic scans and Kerio PF for the software firewall stuff, if not behind a known router with NAT and Firewall on. Free or very cheap in subscription (for the library updates). Many do report AVG as trustworthy (and for free i think).

And, Firefox with Adblock plus and NoScript for not even getting it at the router doorstep.

just my 2 cents, pre lunch thoughts :D

Re: Problem w/ Norton 2007?

Thanks for the replies. I should have mentioned I have to use Norton. I can't uninstall it on this particular PC. AVG is good & I do use it on a personal notebook. I haven't had much good luck w/ McAfee or Panda in the past.

So, is this a known problem w/ Norton interacting w/ the Agent? I didn't find much while searching; but is there a thread about a/v apps & compatibility.

I'll check out BOINC.

Thanks.

Re: Problem w/ Norton 2007?

No worries ZABA77..... we saw it was a business computer. On Norton, WCG is talking to Symantec presently over a bug in their software causing the hang UD agent (just remembered).... see this thread:

Added: LawrenceHardin maintains a thread in the Start Here forum on the various security software and issues.
