cool Re: I AM NEW MEMBER AND REQUIRE DETAIL ABOUT WORLD GRID PROJECT.

Int786, I am uncertain just what you want. If you go to https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/join_now/join_now.html you can download the installation program. Starting at https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/about_us/about_us.html you can read about the World Community Grid and its’ goals.

If instead you are most interested in the current Human Proteome Folding Project, you can read about it on the website for the Institute for Systems Biology at http://www.systemsbiology.org/Default.aspx?pagename=humanproteome

The recent Human Genome Project has identified the DNA templates for synthesizing human proteins. However, this does not automatically tell us how the resulting string of protein bases folds up to form a large interconnected molecule. Molecular biologists are trying to discover just what protein molecules are actually produced in human cells.

One computer program that has been developed to try to do this is the Rosetta program which the World Community Grid is running on thousands of personal computers. If you go to http://bakerlab.org/ which is mentioned on the page at the Institute for Systems Biology and click on PUBLICATIONS, you will be shown a list of scientific papers written on this problem. These papers can be viewed using Acrobat Reader. The most recent paper about the Rosetta program is Rohl, C. A., Strauss, C. E., Misura, K. M., Baker, D. (2004). Protein structure prediction using Rosetta Methods Enzymol 383, 66-93. It is too technical for me to really understand, but I do not have a background in molecular biology.

For my personal convenience, I have a .DOC file with the web pages for this site. It is 34 pages long. I also have the 5 page long Request for Proposal document which lists the goals of the World Community Grid. If you prefer to read printed documents, I can email them to you as attachments.

Re: I AM NEW MEMBER AND REQUIRE DETAIL ABOUT WORLD GRID PROJECT.

Being new also I have two questions that I can't find...

First on the world map of members, what is the 22,000+ number in the Indian ocean representing, what region?

Second it says there are 30,000+ proteins that must be modeled. When I return a result what am I really returning? There have been over 650,000 results returned on 30,000+ proteins, so what is "one"???

thanks,

dale

Re: I AM NEW MEMBER AND REQUIRE DETAIL ABOUT WORLD GRID PROJECT.

Hi Dale

The 22,000 you refer to are members who have registered anonymously
so are therefore not registered to a specific Country

In answer to your 2nd question I may be wrong but I think each protein
has many sub divisions and is broken down into smaller work units to address each sub division

Regards

cool Re: I AM NEW MEMBER AND REQUIRE DETAIL ABOUT WORLD GRID PROJECT.

I will add my guess to Graham's answer. Unless some project like Folding@home comes up with deterministic methods for figuring out how proteins fold up while being manufactured, it looks like a hideously large combinatorial problem to me. I suspect that we are using some rules to cut down on the possibilities and scoring the remaining alternate possibilities according to various criteria to determine their probability. The results should form an enormous database of possible molecular shapes for scientists to pick and choose from, using additional information or tests. This is just a personal guess on my part.
