i was wondering, my computer doesn't have any memory left. Is it a problem for the WCG ?

Re: memory

Hello popoglik,
I am uncertain just what you mean. The system requirements for different projects are listed here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=minimumreq
You can choose to run only projects with small memory requirements. Currently the Genome Comparison Project has the smallest memory requirements.

How much memory does your computer have?
Which WCG client (BOINC or UD) are you using?
If you are running BOINC, are you running more than one thread at a time?

Re: memory

After seeing 258,884 K memory in use on the February 7 on a faah job,

I saw 672,996 K peak memory useage yesterday on an hdc job...

Also note the page faults. That's a lot of reading/writing to disk and would be even greater if I had less RAM. This is a 32 bit Vista capable AMD Barton core computer at 2.1 GHz and it has 1 GB of RAM. I am currently running Windows XP Home Edition SP2. I'm not complaining because I have the resources. The minimum system requirements should be revised.

shock Re: memory

He Vester,

If ever u do upgrade to that new product from the company near Seattle, make sure u got 3gb Ram in there or suffer the consequence of even more paging and overall performance loss of 15% (per gamer tests)

The minimum resources specified are fine and were just upped for the UD agent. But, RAM is everything on these computational intensive projects. FAAH used to take about 128mb ram but the latest batches really do go to peaks of 260mb ram, that is, if u have chosen the 'leave in memory option' if u use BOINC.

With BOINC 5.8, it's not really needed any more, particular if u are attached to WCG only. The new version, not yet endorsed officially by WCG, switches projects at checkpoints saves. No loss of crunch-time is incurred when changing jobs after e.g. a 60 minute schedule. BOINC will wait until one is found, which can also take 2 hours or more. It's compensated as the extra time is added to the project debt of other DC's you may have attached to.

Another new feature for BOINC in 5.8 is the ability to specify the ram used during busy and during idle (see global_prefs_override.xml discussions). If u use the system with a default of 50% (busy) or and 90% (idle), the WCG job will pause, not to impair the use due persistent swapping after reaching that level. Than it will switch to the next job and return to the first which will show 'waiting to run" or "waiting for memory" until resumed.

Hope this helps to understand a bit more from under the hood. nerd

Re: memory

Thanks, Sekerob. I was an official Vista Beta tester but I am not using Vista at this time. I have seen Vista use over 700 MB of RAM without crunching anything, but 2 GB would be adequate for me. I have friends running quad cores and the memory requirements are costing them extra money compared to the days when the crunching game was mostly CPU intensive. I use the BOINC client but WCG is my only project. The screen captures (note visual effects: performance) were done when BOINC 5.8.8 was installed. I have just updated to version 5.8.11.

Those are some impressive characteristics and I appreciate your explaination. I haven't experienced any problems running WCG on two other computers with XP and only 512 MB RAM. We can be glad that XP will have Microsoft support until 2014.
