Hi,
been trying to register a new machine for the last week or so using boinc (running as service) and keep getting the following error message:
PC set-up as follows: OS: Win2K + SP4 + rollup1 Boinc client: version 5.4.11 Firewall: ZoneAlarm version 6.5.737.000 with "server.worldcommunitygrid.org" added as a "trusted" zone CPU: AMD 4400+ (dual-core) 2GB RAM 200GB SATA-II disk - partition where Boinc is installed: 7.98GB total, 5.74GB free In addition, I have had no problems at all over last few months running Rosetta@home including upgrade from Boinc version 5.4.9 to 5.4.11. Any ideas? |

Can you confirm the URL you are using to attach?
Are you using any kind of proxy? Take a look at the actual file BOINC downloaded - it should be in your BOINC folder. |

Can you confirm the URL you are using to attach? yep - tried both www.worldcommunitygrid.org and http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ Are you using any kind of proxy? No Take a look at the actual file BOINC downloaded - it should be in your BOINC folder. master_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml is the only file in the boinc directory, however there is no corresponding directory in boinc\projects for wcg |

The reason I asked these questions is because there are some ISPs that use proxy software to strip and compress data. This process strips out the BOINC information.
Take a look at master_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml and see if it includes <!-- boinc scheduling server <scheduler>https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/boinc/wcg_cgi/fcgi</scheduler> --> near the beginning. If not, then it was stripped out by your ISP. Complain to them! They shouldn't do things like that without asking you. As for a workaround - the forthcoming version of BOINC will solve this problem. Check back in a couple of months, and hopefully upgrading will solve your problem. |

The reason I asked these questions is because there are some ISPs that use proxy software to strip and compress data. This process strips out the BOINC information. hmmph! Indeed. This very text is missing from the xml file .As for complaining to the ISP, well... I'm using UMTS over a mobile due to the utter dearth of DSL in the area. Even moved flat *twice* having been promised each time - even with line-rating speed tests - that DSL was available. Turned out it wasn't after all but they got some cash out of me anyway... Oh, forgot to say, I'm in Northern Germany ATM where the notion of "customer service" meets with either confused or frowning looks... Still, I can always complain to them even if I know it'll end up heading fast to /dev/null - it's the principle that counts! Well, that's what I keep telling myself... As for a workaround - the forthcoming version of BOINC will solve this problem. Check back in a couple of months, and hopefully upgrading will solve your problem. Excellent news and also thank you very much for your help, much appreciated. |

Why wait for BOINC devs to solve the problem? Take the <scheduler> http://abcathome.com/abc_cgi/cgi </scheduler> statement out of the comment block and put it in a <DIV> block.
The above code is in use at the ABC project and is known to pass unfiltered through at least 1 UMTS ISP in Germany. . |

Thanks for reporting the problem and also for identifying a solution that worked on other projects. We will be updating our website later this week and it will include a change that switches the scheduler tag from residing within a HTML comment and placing it into the div tags.
