We are raising the minimum system requirements for HDC running on the UD agent

A few members have noticed that at certain times their machines experience some disk contention while HDC is running. This happens when the project periodically creates a checkpoint file. For this project, this file is rather large and unfortunately the UD agent has no provision for throttling this particular disk activity. The Boinc agent should not have this problem. So, we have decided to increase the minimum system requirements for HDC running on the UD agent to 1025MB of ram and 1000mhz cpu. This disk activity should be much less noticeable on these higher end machines. If you can no longer run this project because your system does not meet the new minimum requirements and still wish to do so, you may install the Boinc Windows agent, for which the minimum requirements remain as they were. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Re: We are raising the minimum system requirements for HDC running on the UD agent

Well, sadly this is unacceptable on my machine (1024MB RAM, 1.7Ghz processor), maybe I have too many other things running for UD to work successfully at the same time, but they take precedence so I'll be opting out of Cancer at this point. I suggest you look again at the RAM usage and minimum recommendations

Re: We are raising the minimum system requirements for HDC running on the UD agent

As my post mentioned above, if you use the Windows Boinc agent instead, you will be able to continue to run this project with lower minimum machine specs, and it should not have the problem of unthrottled I/O during checkpoint saves.

BTW, you do not need to opt out of the project. The servers automatically don't send work to machines which don't meet the minimum requirements for a given project.

Hello Nigel,

If you want to limit the amount of memory that the WCG application is using, you can try setting the percentage that the application uses in your Device Profiles, the "Use no more than: __% of total memory." If you are not using BOINC, try running it instead of the UD agent.

Note: the Memory and throttle settings only work on the BOINC 5.8 version and that has not been declared production fit by WCG as at this writing. The options are only there in preparation to the 5.8 BOINC launch !!!!!

Hello Sek,

Now I know, thanks for the info. By the way, this line is in my global_prefs.xml file:

<ram_max_used_busy_pct>95.0</ram_max_used_busy_pct>
<ram_max_used_idle_pct>95.0</ram_max_used_idle_pct>

I wonder if this has something to do with memory throttling. I'm using 5.4.11.

Re: We are raising the minimum system requirements for HDC running on the UD agent

i use boinc so no problem, but just wondering about the '1025' ram number.

i note my own desktop computer shows 1 gb ram exactly. and 2 x 512 (if someone added 512 mb ram to their original 512) is only 1024 smile

Re: We are raising the minimum system requirements for HDC running on the UD agent

Cio, those 2 lines are leftovers from when u installed the 5.8 test versions. Likely u entered them at some other project where they have advanced also in preparation of the final release or these values were amended manually in xml file. The install defaults are 50/90. WCG set for the idle one 100%, but that may change as 100% was done not to handicap the advanced 'testers'.

The 50 percent 'busy' default put HDC projects in a 'waiting for memory' state on my 1.5gb machine, so upped it to 60%, which was just enough to tilt it, yet keep enough for me to work..... the 'idle' of 90% I left.

Halfcard, yes 1025 for UD agent effectively put the ram mark at 1280 or 1536 physical ram as 1025 to my knowledge does not exist. Why, well occasionally I've seen peaks happening of models being *1090mb*..... the swapping just kills a machine as a usable computer. And that was on BOINC, which does not have all this un-throttled overhead.

Re: We are raising the minimum system requirements for HDC running on the UD agent

I joined this project to Help Defeat Cancer. My machine has a fairly fast processor and 1gb of RAM. It was doing fine with the HDC work units. I would request that the Powers That Be re-examine the requirement that HDC only be processed by comps with greater than 1024MB. biggrin

Re: We are raising the minimum system requirements for HDC running on the UD agent

DD-865,

If you migrate to BOINC you can again run HDC and much smoother than UD. There the requirement is still 725mb RAM.

cheers
What are the recommended minimum system specifications for BOINC on Windows?
Each research project we run on the World Community Grid has different minimum machine requirements.

For the Help Defeat Cancer project, the minimum requirements are:

* At least a 200MHz Intel Pentiumâ„¢ processor or equivalent
* At least 725 MB RAM (with virtual memory enabled)
* 2000 MB Hard Disk Drive with at least 500 MB available for use
* The ability to display 8-bit graphics at 800x600 resolution
* An Internet connection with minimum 40 kbps speed
* Operating System: Windows 98, ME, 2000 or XP
