Hi All,
----------------------------------------I changed my Laptop from UD (60% throttle) to Boinc. Now it runs hot, , no suprise there!! How to throttle my laptop with Boinc? Do I need to setup a seperate Device Manager> Device Profile> Home? Work? School? How do I attach the Laptop to the new profile? For info: There are three boxes using the default Boinc profile at the moment. Help... Allan![]() ![]() ![]() |

Normally Laptops are very good at controlling the CPU speed in association with temperature without manual interference. Usually there is some utility or control panel that allows settings like energy efficient, adaptive, balanced, performance.
----------------------------------------The 5.8.2 BOINC version (beta) has a throttle feature. That needs setting manual as the WCG website does not have the option added yet for the upcoming official release. I got Speedfan installed, that continuously displays the CPU temp in the system tray. On 2 cores laptop running 100% it shows a steady temp of 61C. On the 1 core desktop mini it shows the identical temperature for years, thus don't think it harms.

I need to correct myself. I just visited the WCG BOINC Default profile page and saw 2 values taking me utterly by surprise (or completely overlooked for very long time):
----------------------------------------Use no more than: 6.25 % of processor time Use no more than: 100.0 % of total memory The last one likely to mean RAM use? On the former I'm truely riddled and may explain the work buffer issue many are reporting. Where on earth did 6.25% (Throttle?) come from..... i did not enter it for sure. knreed, would u please advise the functionality. thanks

Those settings were added due to the pending release of the BOINC 5.8 client. They have no effect for users using earlier versions of the client.
Not sure where the 6.25% processor time setting would come from. I just retested null values for the field as well as went to Seti@Home and change my percent there and it was shown the same here. Has anyone else seen this value appear? |

Kevin, I have these two values in my default BOINC profile. Both are set at 100%. I run 5.4.11 and have not run any BOINC beta.

Thanks for the reply Sekerob
----------------------------------------. Cant actually find any kind of utility as you describe on the laptop. But never mind you have answered my question anyway. A better question for me to have asked would have been , "is it ok for a laptop to run at 63-65 degrees C?" As this is what mine is running at ( I have no idea what temp is ok for laptops) Cheers Allan ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I'm no technician, but in my last para i wrote 61C. The Apple Macbook frying pans run much hotter. The price of 9 mm less thickness compared to other laptops: http://www.engadget.com/2006/07/17/cooking-an-egg-on-a-macbook/
----------------------------------------As for utilities a known one related to Intel processors is Speedstep. Visit the Control panel and the energy conservation applet. e.g. The MHz throttling is how temperature is often controlled whereas BOINC's throttle works on partial use of the MHZ available. Modern processors are very good at energy conservation thru hertz reduction. It makes the machine slower, which is why WCG has the UD throttle tool and has pushed for one to be build into BOINC. For my older P4, i use Threadmaster.... does the same thing, but for any application. Summertime i set to 80% or less, else the fans start to cause a whirlwind in my study and eardrums suffer. The WU's take a bit longer, but the regular use does not degrade.

However, they have no effect on any client other then 5.8 and higher. |

Hello Sek, everyone, Assuming that the temperature readings among different computers are correct (to a certain degree), I'm just wondering if a temperature of 62°C is OK for a desktop computer running at 24 hours a day. I have an Intel board and it shows a temperature of 62°C whenever the processor is at full load. ![]() |

Has anyone else seen this value appear? I think i know where the 6.25% came from. Entered (?) months ago that value in the Rosetta@home default preferences mis-taking it was the project weight field. Now how it transposed to WCG...... could there have been experimenting with BAM/AMS? The BAMS website has actually 100% entered as my CPU use default.
