Basic Info

Question from barely-computer-literate new member . . . Can I turn off my Internet connection while my computer works on the currently assigned task? (I don't have a dedicated phone line.)

Re: Basic Info

If you're running UD, yes. If you're running BOINC, I would go to the Advanced View, go to Activity menu, and select Network Activity Suspended until your network is available again.

Re: Basic Info

Hi Mickey Jay

Absolutely. There is no need to be connected to the internet while you crunch the work. You only need to connect when getting new work or sending results back.

The Boinc agent will allow more flexibility than the UD agent as you can download work in advance and store the results before sending them back in. You would only need to connect about every 6 days if you wish.

Cheers. ozylynx smile

Re: Basic Info

One could configure, so that the agent would initiate a dial-up connection. Can be set in the option section of the BOINC. In the web profile u can tell BOINC to disconnect after transmissions are complete. Never used it, so just talking theory. Also u could tell it only to connect between certain hours. Set it so u are at home like e.g. 19:00 to 20:00. and set the work buffer / connect only 1.0 days so u have work for a day. Done that and it worked great.

If on dial up, recommend not to run Help Defeat Cancer. They are quite big 4-5 MB a pop...on 56k they take quite some time to come across.

cheers
