I have checked all the FAQ's at Boinc as well as here. I am currently running Boinc 5.4.9 and want to install the newest Boinc 5.4.11. Should I merely dl 5.4.11 over 5.4.9, or should I put Boinc in snooze mode and then exit the client and then install 5.4.11 into my present Boinc folder. I do intend copying the present Boinc folder to an external; "just in case".
----------------------------------------I tried doing this a couple months ago and somehow the install "went south". Thanks! |

Hi, Johnny Cool.
Yep exit the client and install to the same folder. Works a treat. Cheers. ozylynx ![]() |

There is one member who reported, that the quickest way was to exit BOINC, go to the BOINC program dir then delete:
----------------------------------------BOINC.exe BOINCmgr.exe BOINCcmd.exe boinc.dll Than start the new install which normally will find the existing BOINC program dir. Sometimes this will offer a 'repair' option. At any rate, all your project files and settings should be preserved and upon resume will continue where it left off. But, not before reporting a new version was identified and running a new benchmark. Otherwise it's usually a yawn event. cheers

Sekerob, I shut down the Boinc client and then re-started and deleted those files you posted. Then installed Boinc 5.4.11. Nada! All I got was a Boinc error 2573. Good thing I had my Boinc folder backed up on an external hd. I *may* just do a full uninstall of Boinc after I finish my work unit (which was saved). The second time I tried to install Boinc 5.4.11 over 5.4.9 (then re-booted), and then started up Boinc, it gave me the same error. LOL! Do I really need to change Boinc client to begin with? Oh well, I will simply wait for an answer or two. Thanks all! ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by Johnny Cool at Jan 3, 2007 8:35:57 PM] |

I do know the newer version (5.8.0) will install over 5.7.5 while it is still running but I've not tried the older versions. It will even shut down the service first, if installed that way, and then restart it when done the install.
Why the hesitation to try 5.8.0? Seems to be a solid beta. |

I've found it safest to shut down BOINC, uninstall it and then reinstall the new level of the client (this is on Windows XP). The profiles and data for the running work unit are not removed by this procedure and it seems to work the best. I have installed 5.7 betas over other 5.7 betas without a problem except on one machine where it did not recognize I had installed the new code. Uninstalling and reinstalling seems to avoid this issue.

Sometimes i'm just in awe as to why these strange problems occur.... nothing in Google on a BOINC error 2573. The steps exactly to follow were:
----------------------------------------1. Exit BOINC 2. Check in Taskmanager that all BOINC processes have left (BOINC, . BOINCmgr and the Science like WCG_xxxxxx 3. Delete those 4 files above 4. Go to explorer and find the installer 5. Run installer, whilst ensuring u have admin right / rights to install software. Like Ozylynx reported, works like a dream in 99.99% of the times and he does not even bother to do step 4. Blindly assume you are installing in Windows.

Some misinformation in this thread, I fear.
The Windows installer handles everything. Do NOT delete any files. Do NOT exit BOINC. Simply download and run the installer (as an administrator). It will shut down BOINC, delete the old files (keeping work in progress) and install the new files automatically. It really should be as simple as that. |
