Re: My computer works in vain, why ?

Hi Diana G.

Took a dig to find a discussion on missing graphics, whole or part and this came up. https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=8618#69864

Another question will have to be added to the questionnaire: Do you have on-board video (on mother board) or a separate video card. Video can steal ram from the main 384 you have. Occasionally visit the NVidia website to see if new (WHQL) drivers are available, than upgrade if it applies to the machine.

Typed the SIS Accelerated Graphics Drivers line into the search box of FFX and even before finishing it already had filled in that bolded text and gave a link to

http://www.google.it/search?q=sis+accelerated...cial&client=firefox-a

&

http://www.helpdrivers.com/ingles/listado/pan...tegrated&perif=video1

&

http://www.helpdrivers.com/ingles/listado/dow.asp?codigo=8196

Read carefully and consult your local guru from the office or the nerdy kid on the block that spends 18 hours a day behind the 2 dimensional. Don't apply before that or it might start rendering uniform black or blue.

cheers

oh, did you have missing graphics on any other of the projects?
cant remember who, someone was missing 128mb ram.... it was the video card that took it..... 384 is an odd number for a modernistic PC... usually its 256 or 512.

Re: My computer works in vain, why ?

Good morning Sekerob. Thank you smile I will look into getting an updated driver.

Yeah that was me with the video card/ memory loss question LOL . My memory is 512 MB but you guys helped me realize 128 MB was going to the card. I took the ram off the message page of BOINC and that is how muchit says is there, so I know it looks funny. I still would like to get more ram, but with 9 to 10 WU ready to start now, I hate to stop working long enough to upgrade my tower. Although I know the old saying, "You gotta stop and sharpen the saw."

Oh, and all the other graphics work fine.

I think I wasn't searching using the right terminology, so I appreceiate your hard work! hugs You are so good to us Sek.

Thanks bunches!!

Re: My computer works in vain, why ?

No worries... it's all for the common good.

As to memory upgrading, use CPU-Z to determine the memory type, run to shop (sorry in the US they take an automobile or their truckie), get a strip, run or drive/race back, use philips or regular screwdriver (after proper power down and unplugging the 110) and open box.

Touch some grounded metal and release. Than and only than touch the innards.

It's usually a 5 minute action.

Oh, and also check if you got DirectX 8.... upgrade for the fun to DirectX 9.0c. Some graphics depend on it.

Re: My computer works in vain, why ?

Refresh my memory... 'progress bar issue'? There's one right hand bottom with a percent indicator to 1 decimal exact. There wont be the 3 lines as already explained.

If you want checkpoints desperately, upgrade to alpha development version 5.8.16. That one can log them in the message tab.

Re: My computer works in vain, why ?

Ever since i started using the alpha 5.8.16 i barely look at the graphs to see what the right time is to shut down.... i go to message tab and look at log entries like these:

I think soon there will be a final final recommended 5.8.x point release after which the 5.9 alpha development series will start. If you can, wait for that to upgrade.

Re: My computer works in vain, why ?

Hello, I have kind of the same problem with my HPF2 job here.

That's not the first time I see this king of error but more like the third.

At some point, not always the same percent, the calculation just hangs. The processor gets back to idling instead of running HPF2. I've tried to suspend the task, but nothing happens when i re-activate it.

I run under linux (Ubuntu 7.04).

I have even tried to set the 3 wcg_hpf2 process to -20 nice (highest on the edge priority) but it's not doing anything, they stay in sleep.

What is strange, is when I suspend the WCG task, the processes still remains in the active processlist. Maybe I should kill them.

If someone else encouters thats problem, I would be glad to see it and I'm opened to all suggestions.

Thanks (and sorry if i'm not posting in the right category)

Re: My computer works in vain, why ?

The trick learned from olympic was to suspend the project i.e. WCG in the Project tab of BOINCmgr interface. The time to wait is about 30 seconds. It worked for me all the time the first time (3 cases here).

Suspending WCG altogether should unload the process, in case the "Leave In Memory" option is on.

Added: reference the post below by Excelcior, the workaround above stops the requirement to exit BOINC completely or boot the computer.
