Yes, it's a problem with the UD agent. There's little WCG can do about it (they've done everything they can). BOINC doesn't have this issue with HDC, although it still writes large files.

Hello, it seems exactly the same problem as mine.
My machine is T60 (not T60p), with Windows XP SP2 Japanese version. Could you try to stop the sevice named "IPS Core Service" (IPSSVC.exe)? The problem disappeared in my case. I do not know why, perhaps someone could explain the reason? |

Thanks shira,
Here is what I found with Google. Name : IPS Core Service (IPSSVC) Command : IPSSVC.EXE Product Name: "Away Manager" Description : A VPN client service found in Lenovo Thinkpad. Note: located in C:\WINDOWS\system32\ Google found this post: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=25...995c2d32b739c07b3d51adf85 I figured out what it is, though. It is the "ThinkVantage Away Manager" (I finally looked in the ThinkVantage folder.). It "schedules system tasks to run when you are not doing any work" -- things like defrag, disk cleanup, MS anti-spyware (shudder)... Thanks, but no thanks. Un-installed it as soon as I figured that out. Glad Astro identified IPSSVC.EXE is associated with Away Manager as not much was found except it is related to IPSec service when I googled such process. Anyway, when I let my one month old T60 (2623-D6U ) on standby for a couple days, IPSSVC.EXE would consume about 50% of CPU usage. I noticed this condition at least twice now and email Lenovo Support yesterday. Has anyone experienced this and is it safe to uninstall Away Manager? Lawrence |

We are a Lenovo/IBM shop where I work and I noticed a few of the add on software that comes with the T60's cause slow boot-up's and high utilization. I remove --- software update stuff, access connection and the away manager. There may be a few more, can't remember right now. Just too much junk pre-loaded with these laptops tha are really not needed. -Brink [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at Dec 22, 2006 2:53:11 PM] |

Hi, I can confirm the problem with slowdowns. To make it clear: The slowdowns happen due to overwhelming hard disc reading/writing. Yes, this happens most often when coming out of hibernate mode or booting up, but also sometimes for no apparent reason in the middle of the work. When I terminate the grid client, this stops. I have Acer Travelmate 8100 notebook (Centrino 2 Gz, 1 Gb RAM, 100Gb SATA disc). The hard disc is defragmented on regular basis, there is plenty of space on it, the computer is virus and spyware-free (as IT-responsible in our Department I should know;)). I have noticed this only when the client works on help_defeat_cancer. I have just changed the settings in order to remove that project from my list. As I am writing this, my disc is again in the full run, effectively disabling any activity that requires hard disc operation (including but not limiting to opening word documents). I would classify this as a bug. Best regards, akell Hello Zhong Tao Gao/China/IBM, FightAIDS@Home is a fairly small project, particularly if you have a 2 GB machine running Core Duo. I cannot think of anything that could cause such a slowdown, unless temperature is forcing the laptop to reduce clock speed. Is there a utility program that comes with your laptop that can detect temperature or clock slowdowns? Lawrence Hello akell, How about setting the value of Write to disk at most every: __seconds to a high number. I had problems before (when the value was at 60 seconds) but it disappeared when I increased this to 600 seconds. I do think that this is not a permanent fix. Frequent disk writes can slow the system, right? |

Cio,
----------------------------------------The problem is in substance with the UD(WCG) agent. The Write to Disk setting is only available for BOINC. I got enough memory so set it to its highest of 999 seconds (17 minutes). It will save regardless if there is a checkpoint is what i think from HD observation, so on BSOD or power out, loose little progress.

Hello Sek, Yeah, I realized that akell was referring to the UD agent, I'm sorry, :-). |
