Hi all,
I'm not sure whether I should post this on the WCG forum or on the forum of my firewall. I'll just start here (and run if a flame war starts ![]() Relevant system characteristics: Windows XP Home edition SP2 Sygate Personal Firewall Pro 5.5.2710 Dialup connection I've followed the instructions on http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=217#1190 to run UD.exe as a service. That's running smoothly. However, when it's time to connect to the grid server, my firewall blocks the connection! This happens despite the fact that I've created a so-called “Advanced Rule” that allows any connection to the grid server (IP 129.33.89.134) by any application. If, alternatively, I stop the UD.exe service and start the WCG agent from the Start menu, Sygate allows the connection. In Sygate's traffic log, both the allowed connections' log entries and the blocked connections' log entries refer to the (same) Advanced Rule. This happens when I'm logged on and connected. (When I'm not connected, there's nothing for the firewall to block [duh], and when I'm not logged on, I'm not connected anyway [duh]). Am I missing something obvious? Or is it a Sygate bug? Does anybody have the the combination of UD.exe-as-a-service and SPF Pro working? Any comments are greatly appreciated. Thanks and kind regards Fred |

"I stop the UD.exe service and start the WCG agent from the Start menu, Sygate allows the connection "
----------------------------------------That is a clever work around. [Grin] I think that you should report your problem to a user's group for Sygate to see if anyone can come up with a labor-free solution. Not everyone has your patience. Have you ever run into Homebuilt CPUs WebRing at http://www.homebrewcpu.com/ ? Once the 4 GB flash memory chips mentioned here http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=20253 become available, this will go mainstream but right now flash drives are still an enthusiast’s topic, such as this article on Linux on a 256 MB flash drive at http://arstechnica.com/columns/linux/linux-20041109.ars [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Dec 17, 2004 8:08:21 AM] |

There is a feature in Sygate that blocks attacking IP addresses, and WCG has been doing some port scanning. So I think that's what has triggered Sygate to block the WCG.

So I think that's what has triggered Sygate to block the WCG. This is not the cause. The "scanning IPs" (currently 129.33.82.49-53 in my logs) are not the same as the grid server (129.33.89.134). Besides, Sygate should behave the same regardless of how UD.exe is run (as a service or as a "normal" app): either it should be blocked at all times or permitted at all times, but it shouldn´t be different when UD.exe is run as a service. Meanwhile, I have contacted Sygate support and they've asked me to send them some log files. I'll do that as soon as I´m able to replicate the problem, i.e. when I finish my current WU. As soon as I´ve got anything worth mentioning, I´ll post it here. Thanks for thinking along! |

Hi Fred,
Please do post what you find out from Sygate, as I've been having this same problem. Matthew |

Finally, there's news!
It took some time, but at least it's fixed now. Sygate has released a debugging build (3311), and I have been able to confirm that this build indeed solves the problem. Anyone interested can download this build from the following location: http://207.33.111.31/pspf/Debug_Build/ (Sygate allowed me to post the link here). NOTE: I don't know if my memory is accurate (can't remember that ![]() Good luck, Fred |
