I have been running the agent for a couple of weeks now and everything had been working fine. Now, all the sudden, I get the error message "Agent Paused, see www.wcgrid.org/cause.html." I've referenced that page, but the issues described don't seem to fit my situation. Does anyone have any suggestions? I can't recall changing anything.

There is one new change to everybody's system. Rick Alther has finally released the new trimmed-down version of Rosetta running in 25 MB with 200 MB of virtual memory instead of 72MB with 300 MB of virtual memory. This might cause problems with people's firewalls so we are expecting lots of queries about the "Agent Paused" page which discusses firewalls.
Could you double check to make sure that your anti-virus / firewall security programs are happy with your new program? Lawrence |

Thanks for the response, but I'm not sure how to check everything. How do I check the settings and verify that they are appropriate?

For McAfee, I just click on any McAfee Icon, then navigate to the Firewall program. There is usually an icon in the Systray, though sometimes it is hidden behind the << arrow, so I have to hover over the arrow.

I am in exactly the same position as markafreeman: my "Agent Paused" since Saturday 11 December. The original notice does not seem to apply.
I have shot two queries at the system managers without reply. I do not know what to check in respect of the firewall, and in any case mine is part of Norton Systemworks 2004 rather than McAfee. |

roop1940,
Have you installed the Symantec automated support assistant at http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/consumer.html and run through its’ problem solving queries? Lawrence |

You can check the log of your firewall. If it tells something about blocking the WCG app then you now it's cause of this

Thanks Pconfig. My Norton Firewall has nine logs including "Firewall" and "Web History". These two are apparently limited to 130 or so lines, covering the last three or so hours. No sign of WCG or any likely expression from that source on any of the nine.
Thanks lawrencehardin. I picked up yout tag to Symantec. It seemed only to direct me to buying an upgrade to Systemworks 2005 or various alternate packages. My Systemworks 2004 only offers tech support for an up-front payment; that has not served me very well when I needed help with the Symantec package in the past, so I am not inclined to ask it about WCG ! I am sorry if this is turning into a private surgery, but thanks for all your help. How is Markafreeman doing ? |

OK, so you've got norton. I'd check the connections log. You first close down and reopen the WCG client because then i tries to connect. Then search again somewhere in your logs. Normally it should appear in connections or intrusion attempts.

Pconfig
Yesterday morning I printed off my Norton Anti-Virus Connections log - about 300 events over about 9 hours (including my dormant period). Among other events it records hits by WCG in two forms. The first is in the name of worldcommunitygrid.org(129.33.89.133) which I shall call "W1". The second is in the form www.worldcommunitygrid.org(213.1.121.5) - "W2". W1 comes up when I call the WCG icon from the bottom task bar. W2 comes up when I go onto the forum as I do now. The Connections log records, after the contact name, an element which is either "http(80)" or "https(443)". 443 is less common; in that case my unit either sends 195 and receives 5 bytes or 0 and 0 or occasionally 195 and 0. Element 443 is always associated with W1. Twice element 80 is associated with W1. My unit sent 281 and received 753 in each case. On the other 61 occasions W2 had various amounts of conversation. Once, in the same log minute, the exchange was 491 ... 0, 0 ... 0 and 489 ... 0. Otherwise my unit would often send variously 200 to 300 bytes and receive 162, 167, 452 or 457. While I have been writing this (over the last hour) the log shows eight contacts by secure.worldcommunitygrid.org(129.33.89.133). I hope this is worth your while to read. Clearly WCG is trying to connect but I have no idea what to do about this evidence. Thanks again Rupert Butler |
