Multiprocessor computer

Does the grid automatically use more then one cpu if I have a mulitprocessor computer or do I have to download a application to have it use all my processors? If so what is the website for that.

Re: Multiprocessor computer

Hi Hiate,

With the UD(WCG) grid agent only one core is used. It cannot use more. With BOiNC the default is i think 4 cores i.e. yes all will be used.

If u wish u can transition....the differences explained here:
Differences http://www.wcgwiki.org/en/which_agent/agents_101.cfm
Change Path http://www.wcgwiki.org/en/boinc/migration.cfm

An Experienced Member or Community Advisor will be happy to assist.

cheers

Re: Multiprocessor computer

It doesn't seam as fast using 1 cpu it takes 22 seconds to get .1 percent at 99 percent usage using the grid agent with one cpu takes about 35 seconds to get .1 percent using the bionic agent believe that using 99 or 100 that what it says in my task manager atleast. Why is the grid agent more effieceint with 1 cpu is their anyway i can make the bionic agent faster?

Re: Multiprocessor computer

You aren't comparing the same work unit. Overall, BOINC is very slightly faster on most projects.

Re: Multiprocessor computer

Hello Hiate,
Is there a way I can set the cpu usuage with the Bionic agent?

This feature is being added to BOINC, but it will be a while before I start recommending using it. I think it still needs some development.

What sort of multi-processor computer do you have?

Have you ever used ThreadMaster at http://bednorz.uni2.net/anyland/threadmaster/threadmaster.htm ?

Re: Multiprocessor computer

welcome hiate,

log into "my grid"
click "device manager"
"device profiles"
under "advanced options" you will see the box for "on mulitprocessors".......

change it there. if you have a single amd dualcore, change it to 2, a dual dualcore to 4. if an intel with hyperthreading, change it to 2 to take advantage of the slight increase in speed. a dual xeon for example goes to 4. hth

Re: Multiprocessor computer

Thanks, vavega.

I think that you understood hiate's question better than I did.

When running multiple work units, remember that each work unit will require some working memory to avoid a lot of paging using virtual memory.

Re: Multiprocessor computer

To be clear:

1) UD can use only 1 thread.

2) BOINC can use as many threads as you have. Just make sure the setting is at least as high as your highest machine. For example, I have a dual chip, Xeon "Dempsey" machine. Dempseys are dual core with HyperThreading. That means the OS sees 8 CPUs (threads). So I make sure my device manager setting is 8 for max number of CPUs.

3) BOINC cannot apply multiple threads to work on a single Work Unit (nothing can as far as I know). Instead, BOINC will assign a separate WU to each thread, and run them simultaneously. So using my machine from #2 as an example, I don't run 1 WU 8 times as fast. Instead I run 8 WUs at normal speed in parallel.

Clear as mud?
