I've been having several Linux installations crap out lately. They're running 5.4.9. At first, they will crank away happily but eventually they come up with a dialog stating that the manager is unable to contact a client. The manager also sends to stdout (or stderr?) the following:
SIGPIPE: write on a pipe with no readersend: -1 send: Broken pipe several times. This kind of thing has happened a few times before. I know at one point this was due to a defective application. Another time I saw this when my BOINC package got old. However my BOINC is the current version. Any help that can be given would be greatly appreciated. I'm so close to passing a points milestone and I hate to see that I missed a day of calculation... |

I'm no Linux expert, but when Googling, it was explained in such a way, that it could be pointing at the BOiNCmgr loosing communication with the BOiNC daemon or science. Could hint at security software interfering with RPC traffic, which takes place over localhost and port 31416.
----------------------------------------If u have the BOiNC GUI, does it appear frozen or unresponsive?

I had that problem on a slow windows machine.
----------------------------------------The task would run to completion and the scheduling would just sit there and not send in the result. Running the benchmarks helped it get started once on a previous day, but no more. It was still running 5.4.9. Oops. I downloaded the current 5.4.11 from BOINC and things started up normally. The finished task was sent in and a new task was downloaded and is running. 5.4.9 is still the current recommended version for Linux, so if it is not the security software, would a simple BOINC reinstall help?

This is happening all over the place. There are two major threads discussing it, one in Rosetta:

The slow Windows98 machine with BOINC client and GC project was still sitting there this morning.
----------------------------------------Firewall settings allowed communication. A cold boot did not help. I connected to the internet. Same thing. When the machine was running and the internet was up I simply exited BOINC completely and restarted the BOINC manager. Upload/download initiated and completed normally. The program order between BOINC and connection may have something to do with what is going on. (This was a windows sequence, but something similar may be happening with Linux here.)
