CPU throttle for Mac OSX Boinc needed urgently

Hello all,

I run BOINC on a Mac OS-X notebook, which has a habit of running my Intel Core Duo at 100% output. This quickly heats the system beyond 75 degrees Celsius, which I'm told hurts system life. The cooling fan constantly runs and I do worry about overheating the CPU.

I really hope a "throttle" feature could be added to BOINC so that I could restrict the work load and thus keep my CPU cool. Any thoughts?

Ryan,

it will be in version 5.8. In fact i think it's already in the 5.6.4 alpha for Mac, but very crude....1 second off 2 seconds on, if u want to run it e.g. 67%. It achieves a temperature drop, but the experience is not the best, thus WCG and other DC's have asked for lots more refinement. Try at your own risk: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php

Visit BOiNC forum @ http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_index.php for Q&A.

cheers and happy thanksgiving

No need to worry, the critical temperature for Core Duo CPUs is about 100 degrees Celsius, 75 degrees is perfectly ok. My Mini constantly runs with approx. 80 degrees

Hello RyanMcCabe,
Are you running 2 threads? If you run only 1 thread, what is the temperature?
You can control the number of threads using 'On multiprocessors, at most use:' n 'processors' by changing n from the default of 4 to 1. You can change this by going to My Grid - Device Manager - Device Profiles and selecting your current BOINC profile.

Alpha 5.7.5 has been released for the Mac, so if you want to take a walk on the wild side.... Sekerob gave you the link.
