Folding@home can now use GPUs to crunch for their project. GPUs have much higher floating point performance than a general purpose CPU, and so process much more data. Maybe WorldCommunityGrid can add such capability to our project?

Hello fightagainstcancer90,
If you read the Folding@Home forum, you will see that currently they are able to use GPU computing on only a subset of their problems. But it really flies on what it does run . So some project will have to do the GPU coding, with no assurance that their problem will run well on a GPU. Here are some other recent threads about GPUs: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=9666 http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=9021 http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=8928 http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=7154 Lawrence |

If interested in the difficulty to convert these science applications, visit the Climate Prediction website. It took them 2 years to convert 1 million lines of Fortran developed over many years on supercomputer to fit into a x32 machine. All the sciences run here are unique and have taken very long time to develop, thus porting it to a quite different processing concept of a GPU, of which there are many many variations, would take so much effort that it does not pay..... opposed there are 600 million plus x32 PC's connected to the internet as a huge untapped resource. Now that said, like the science at F@H.... they worked over 2 years behind closed doors to build it specifically for a GPU. The idea has been planted and as posted elsewhere on this forum, WCG is looking at the feasibility of doing something with the PS3.
