Re: BOINC Graphical User Interface, Nearing your Desktop

Noticed these 2 entries in the BOINC log, then searching further found them being downloaded each time upgrading the BOINC agent.......the png file is an icon of WCG which looks sized for the future graphic interface. Is it actually used anywhere presently?

Re: BOINC Graphical User Interface, Nearing your Desktop

Sorry for my english.....

Hi, i had the UD agent and i begin to interest me to Boinc. ... Nevertheless, I see that Boinc has not the graphic interface of the ud agent: why? a day one will be able to see this that our percent calculates and his representation under BOINC, for I find that this is interessant and motivating to see this that the percent calculates..

I will like to pass under Boinc but this problem does me to hesitate. ...

No - but we need to test :-)

Hopefully in a few weeks you will see a few other sites that like to be earlier adopters add the file also. The 'B' images represent projects which have not provide a custom icon - the WCG logo is the one that will represent us (which is downloaded when you initially connect.

Re: BOINC Graphical User Interface, Nearing your Desktop

Update on the BOINC Simple GUI (BSG)
BOINC 5.6 Release Canceled

Recently it was announced the 5.6 BOINC has been canceled to concentrate on the 5.8 code (as 5.7 for the time being)
Why is this and why can you not release 5.6 as is now?

The BSG (BOINC Simple GUI) is nearing completion and the 5.6 release was nearing completion but wasn't done baking yet.

After looking over the schedules it became pretty clear that managing two different test efforts was going to create a lot of confusion and management hassles.

We believe we have stabilized most, if not all of the 5.6 features, and the remaining testing work will be focused on the BSG and improved memory management support. We believe we are a few weeks out from having a stable BSG build ready for the public, so instead of asking the community at large to do two back-to-back upgrades within a month, we decided to bag 5.6 and focus on 5.8.

I personally believe this is for the best.

If the tech savvy people want to checkout 5.6 then by all means go ahead and play around with it. We won't be releasing any bug fix releases for that version of the client though.

Re: BOINC Graphical User Interface, Nearing your Desktop

Well it's a pity that 2.6 is being scrapped for 2.8, but I agree with Rom that it is for the better. Far better to release a properly tested version of the Simple GUI along with a version upgrade, when you consider it is aimed at newcomers to BOINC and those who are confused by or feel uncomfortable with the standard BIONC Manager.

Anyway, keep up the good work!

Re: BOINC Graphical User Interface, Nearing your Desktop

Has anyone notice a large number of failed work units with BOINC after the openGL graphic was added?
We are seeing very strange behaviors as well.
For example, we run the BOINC client with "Do work while computer is in use?" set to No but the client does not properly idle the docking process when user activity was detected.
We were able to work around this issue by setting the "Leave applications in memory while preempted?" option from yes to no.
It now appears to preempt properly but this problem appeared just after the openGL screensaver started showing up on our clients. We are also seeing a large number of work units erroring out I am suspected has something to do with the client failing to suspend the processes and hanging when coming out of screensaver.
here is a error log from one of the many failed work units:

Re: BOINC Graphical User Interface, Nearing your Desktop

Have a look here for more information about this problem.

The WCG grid techs may need to look into this further.

Re: BOINC Graphical User Interface, Nearing your Desktop

RTCGrid,

We are currently looking into why this is happening on your machines. Can you try upgrading the graphic drivers on a few of the machines that are having this issue to see if it may be a problem with an old graphics drivers. Another thing we are looking into on this problem is where the checkpointing is called, because it appears it never returns back from a checkpoint call.
