Re: BOINC Graphical User Interface, Nearing your Desktop

The new Simple BOINC version is skinnable. What you are seeing in this forum is a WCG skin. We'll list out what can be customized so anyone can make their own look and feel. It will initially come up with a default BOINC skin. What we've shown here is the WCG skin.

Nice one smile
Of my experience, when I ran BOINC at first I cannot understand what it is at all, since BOINC doesn't have graphics by default unlike UD. Just a window with several tabs and buttons. Why can computer beginners start crunching easily w/o graphics?

Re: BOINC Graphical User Interface, Nearing your Desktop

The graphics in the middle of the picture aren't live, but it will be animated. Right now it is an animated gif which is a representation of the real graphics. It takes very little cpu. If you click on it, you'll launch the real BOINC graphics-- the same as clicking show graphics on the current BOINC Manager.

Thanks,
Blaine.

I agree with Suguruhirahara, a graphic helps beginners understand what the science application is doing. An animated GIF is an excellent compromise, I like it. If the animation is made long enough then most users will never realise it's the same sequence repeating over and over.

Seeing the real graphics will not add more to a beginner's understanding than the animated GIF adds to her/his understanding. Therefore I would like to see an adjustment to the method for bringing up the real graphics. If we could require the user to simutaneously depress keys CTRL, Q, ?, ~, F12, SHIFT, F5, G, 4, 7 and the DEL key on the Number Pad then it would rate a "PERFECT 10" rather than just excellent. devilish

Re: BOINC Graphical User Interface, Nearing your Desktop

There is no fixed timescale either for BOINC graphics or for the BOINC Simplified User Interface.

That said, the WCG staff aren't exactly sitting around twiddling their thumbs. Expect both fairly soon.

Re: BOINC Graphical User Interface, Nearing your Desktop

I sent Rom some updated shots to post on his website.

You'll see the WCG skin, which will be the default for users who sign up with us and the default BOINC skin which will be for users who download BOINC from the Berkeley servers.

Thanks,
Blaine.

Re: BOINC Graphical User Interface, Nearing your Desktop

While I agree that that anything that makes it easier for beginners to use BOINC is good, at first impression this does'nt impress me much as a serious client interface.

At second thought, I doubt it was designed to be one, but rather an easier introduction to the depths of BIONC. Which makes a nice change from being thrown in head first in the deep end, I suppose. smile

Ah, the kids of today have it so easy smile

*mutturs, goes of into corner and recatagorises punch cards*

edit: spelling, clarified

Re: BOINC Graphical User Interface, Nearing your Desktop

I think there is a little something for everyone in this and I look forward to its release. I do hope it will expand to full screen for reading the messages or else provide some similar facility for reading the messages. I would not want to have to read the messages in the narrow window I see in the preliminary screenshots.

Remember that you can always toggle over to the current BOINC Manager, with all its features, by clicking "Advanced View".

Thanks,
