How hot too hot?

On my Dell Mini 9, solid state laptop, Atom processor, Ubuntu OS -- I just installed the computertemp temperature monitor applet for GNOME. It reads ACPI that the computer -- with BOINC running -- runs at about 130°. When running other programs, too, it will run in the 140-150° range, with spikes to 160°.

Is this too hot? Should I be looking to throttle back my BOINC or pause it while I'm doing other work?

I have the same applet installed on my desktop with Ubuntu OS, and it runs constantly at 104°.

Re: How hot too hot?

Over boiling point? What are you doing, disabling all the cooling?

Or are you using some crazy temperature scale based on the blood temperature of a horse?

Maybe just Fahrenheit (instead of Centigrade)?
Room temperature is about 70°F.

Re: How hot too hot?

Safe and maximum operating temperatures are specified in celcius, so you may want to change the display setting for your applet.

Re: How hot too hot?

most of the programs dont read corectly on lots of laptops....
they lie
its because they do not have all the sensors and hardware that desktops do,,, simply put theres no room..
try a program called cpu-z thats the temp to watch , but the atoms dont get very hot at all....

Let's see: [°C] = ([°F] − 32) × 5⁄9

130°F = 54.4°C

160°F = 71.1°C

Does that help, Didactylos?

Re: How hot too hot?

54 Celsius while running BOINC doesn't sound too hot at all. I'm no expert on mini laptops, but my normal laptop doesn't even spin up the fan to higher speeds until it gets above 60.

My laptop can handle 70 degrees aswell without much problem, although it does get noisy, so I prefer to keep it under 60.
